Celebrate Heritage Day with Local Flavour at Nederburg's The Manor

At Nederburg’s The Manor, South African heritage isn't only celebrated for one day or one month of the year – it is a consistent theme in the Paarl restaurant’s creative seasonal menus. Even so, the kitchen team led by head chef Linda Trautmann, has prepared an inspired and festive Heritage Day Sunday lunch menu for 24 September (at R335 per person). The freshest locally sourced ingredients take centre stage and there is great variety for the whole family, showing that the flavours of home truly are the most satisfying of all.

The Manor is located in the atmospheric original manor house on Nederburg. This stately thatched Cape Dutch homestead was built by the farm's first owner Philippus Wolvaart in 1800 and is a national monument. It is also a monument to Wolvaart’s ingenuity and perseverance, as he had to make many long and arduous journeys from Paarl to Cape Town by ox-wagon for building materials to complete this vast project.

Today Wolvaart’s legacy is honoured not only by the beautiful architecture he left behind, but also in Heritage Heroes The Anchor Man Old Vine Chenin Blanc named after its innovative founder. The Heritage Heroes collection likewise pays tribute to other legends who played a pioneering role in establishing Nederburg as a pre-eminent winery, with The Motorcycle Marvel Rhône-style red blend (Günter Brözel) and The Brew Master Bordeaux-style red blend (Johann Graue).

These award-winning heritage wines tell the stories of important chapters in Nederburg’s illustrious history and will fittingly be served with main dishes on the Heritage Day menu. Visitors can look forward to a family-style lunch filled with nostalgic traditional favourites given a moreish, modern twist.

A starter of freshly baked breads and Cape delicacy snoek pâté prepares the palate for a feast of heritage mains, including slow-cooked springbok potjie with red wine jus, ostrich fillet with biltong jus, chicken filled with boerewors and brandy cream sauce, as well as vegetarian bobotie. An assortment of fresh spring-inspired sides complement these dishes to perfection. Dessert is an exciting trio of South African sweet treats – traditional and reimagined.

A blackboard lunch special will also be served, as well as the popular snack boards to share. As ever, kids will be able to enjoy a feast of their favourite dishes and play their hearts out on the recently upgraded jungle gym, zip line, tree house and swings. Lawn games and other fun activities are also available.

Book now to ensure that you don't miss out on this special event which promises to be a memorable celebration of local is lekker. The winelands are alive with the invigorating sights and sounds of spring, and the team looks forward to sharing it with you and your loved ones this Heritage Day.
