Immersive Dining at ÅŒku - Franschhoek's Leading Asian Eatery

Since opening in Franschhoek four years ago, Ōku, has risen to become the destination of choice for exquisite Southeast Asian specialities. Now, it adds to the attraction with extended lunchtime hours and a significant addition to its menu options.

Situated in Heritage Square off the village main road, the eatery is the epitome of its name. Ōku is Japanese for oak, a majestic species that like Southeast Asian culture evokes a deep sense of history and spirituality. In addition to serving finely crafted dishes, the restaurant’s appeal has been that each plate stands out on the backdrop of Ōku’s typically minimalist Japanese aesthetic.

The 15-course Kaiseki menu at Ōku has been the heart of the immersive experience. Added to lunchtimes, however, is a new a la carte selection of sharing plates, priced between R80 and R150. Lunchtime trade hours have also been extended, with Ōku now being open until 3pm.

The changes open up even more variety and give customers broader choice in pricing and dining preferences – from quick, light-bites to longer lingers.

The a la carte menu features the same meticulous preparation and inspiration for which Ōku is known. Among the options are, for example, a hot and sour mame broth with beans, mange tout, tofu and chilli; Norwegian salmon with salmon tataki gyoza, cashews, pickled carrot, basil and turmeric broth; chicken wonton broth with charred corn, edamame, basil, coriander, black bean; and, lamb belly bao with white cabbage kimchi and gochujang mayonnaise.

Desserts are equally enticing with, amongst others, a Japanese cheesecake with cherries, white chocolate and cinnamon.

Dedicated vegetarian dishes remain a feature too as is the drinks offering, which includes bespoke cocktails, a showcase of local wineries; and, various fine sakes.

A family of dining excellence

Ōku is part of a trio of local restaurants along with Eleven, which offers an exceptional fusion of contemporary global cuisine inspired by bold themes; and, Yama Asian Eatery.

At the heart of the group’s culinary philosophy lies a commitment to sustainability in sourcing ingredients. A significant portion of produce used in its kitchens is locally harvested from the Franschhoek region as a way of showcasing seasonal freshness.
